AbstractThis article charts the long-term development of seigneurial governance within the principality of Guelders in the Low Countries. Proceeding from four quantitative cross-sections (c. 1325, 1475, 1540, 1570) of seigneurial lordships, the conclusion is that seigneurial governance remained stable in late medieval Guelders. The central argument is that this persistence of seigneurial governance was an effect of active collaboration between princely administrations, lords, and local communities. Together, the princely government and seigneuries of Guelders formed an integrated, yet polycentric, state. The article thereby challenges the narrative of progressive state centralisation that predominates in the historiography of pre-modern state formation.
This edition collects instructions, police ordinances, decrees and related normative sources concerning the economic activities of landlords and subjects of the estates Feldsberg (today Valtice in the Czech Republic) and Wilfersdorf in the north-eastern corner of Lower Austria from the end of the sixteenth century up to 1815. All this sources illustrate the social, cultural and economic microcosm created and imagined by the authorities and show how the landlords tried to dominate and control their subjects with the help of their administrative apparatus and through regulations.
; This paper is about the conflicts in two agro-towns of Lower Andalucia (Osuna and Morón de la Frontera) caused by the distribution of communal lands to poor peasants, landless farmers and labourers, which was ordered by the Council of Castile from 1767. The municipalities are described as dynamic and still largely autonomous political units, which are however bound up in complex networks of institutional and personal relationships within the structures of seigneurial jurisdictions and the State. The paper investigates the possibilities which poor peasants had of legally enforcing the ordinances of the Council of Castile against the resistance of the local governments. The peasants tried to use the patronage of the urban elites, the seigneurial administration of the Duke of Osuna or the clergy. They in turn used the peasants' protest movements as an instrument in their own struggle against the local governments.

; In the relations between monarchy and nobility, a classic topic of the political medieval historiography, occupies a key chapter the joint between the supreme administration of the royal justice and the seigneurial jurisdictions. In this article the relations are studied between both jurisdictional instances, its contradictions and the attempts for harmonizing them, both in the theory and in the juridical-political practice, during the first half of the 15th century.

By studying the archives of the feudal Lords of Southern Italian between the 14th-16th centuries you can understand the real nature of their power and how it was expressed. The volume, which takes into account the most recent historiography, relies on the study and inventory of important documentary collections held in the Archivio di Stato of Naples, such as the Sommaria (Relevi with the files for feudal succession; Dipendenze, I, Conti erariali dei feudi and Diversi, with the seigneurial account books acquired by the State of those lord who had been rebellious or had died without heirs). The authors deal also with the cartularies ('platee') of aristocratic dynasties as the Ruffo and the Sanseverino, based in Calabria, and with the parchments of the Albertini from Nola. Thanks to the rich information derived by these archival series and account books, the authors bring new light on the seigneurial powers, the typology of the records produced by and for the Lords, the administration of their estates, the strategy for elaborating the family memory.
; This paper intends an approach to a scarcely known Ancien Regime feature in Spain: lordship administration, and especially lordship corregidores, in an altogether new context, that of transition to the constitutional government. To that purpose, we show a propographical study of the corregidores of an important town under lordship administration: Conil de la Frontera, in the Estate of the Duke of Medina Sidonia, between 1779 and 1810, up to the interruption of seigneurial regime in this village due to French occupation.

During the 13th to 15th centuries, the main towns of Aquitaine under English rule and located in Bordelais (Blaye, Bordeaux, Bourg, Cadillac, Libourne, Saint-Émilion, Saint-Macaire), developed, as part of the boom in writing and preservation of archives, many and varied forms of documentary practices : copies of royal acts, constitution of procedural files, rolls, chirographs, signs, cartularies, etc. Concomitantly with their political organisation, whether they were set up as a commune or remain under seigneurial domination, they thus constituted archival funds, the composition of which, specific to each of them, most often reflects an affirmation of identity and the construction of community memory, the scope and strategies of which vary, in particular according to the status of these cities. The most successful examples of these identity and memory strategies, highlighted by codicological and textual analyses, are the Bordeaux and Libourne cartularies, which were carefully structured prior to their development, sometimes modified, thus marking the political and social evolutions of these communities, particularly in the difficult context of the war of Hundred years. The identities and memories emanating from these archives and these documentary practices underline the social composition of these cities, their political and commercial ambitions, going beyond, for Bordeaux and Libourne, the local and often conflictual framework. They also make it possible to identify the relationships between these urban communities, their main concerns or the hegemony of the jurade over the inhabitants. In addition, the study of these funds, and in particular their comparison, with regard to the royal acts, with the Gascon roles kept in the English chancellery, makes it possible to understand the very direct relationship maintained by these communities with the English sovereigns, sometimes to the detriment of the royal administration set up in Aquitaine, but also raises the question of the archival choices made : the ...
